Scene NightsPlaywrights bring in pages from a work-in-progress and have them read by paid actors with a facilitated peer feedback after each scene. Playwrights are given a total of 20 minutes (roughly 10 pages/10 minutes for reading and 10 for feedback). Members work is read for free; non-members pay $5 fee. Attendance is free. First 4 actors are paid $10.
Developmental ReadingsPCSF has two Reading Series each year; Spring and Fall. Playwrights submit plays for consideration. The Literary Committee reads and evaluates all submitted plays. Selected plays receive one of two types of readings. Developmental Readings are unrehearsed table-readings of the full play in front of an audience with a facilitated feedback session afterward. Attendance is free. Actors are paid $10. PCSF pays for the first 6 actors, the playwright pays for any additional actors needed.
Staged ReadingsOne of PCSF's most important events is the staged reading. The purpose of the readings is to give local playwrights a real hands-on look at how their play is beginning to take shape on the stage, freeing it from the confines of the author's page. All other members who have paid their membership fee can attend these readings for free. There is a sliding scale of $5-$10 for non-members. Probably the greatest gift a staged reading offers is the opportunity to discover what works and what doesn't. It can answer questions the playwright may have about his or her play and present new ones, as well. It's a way to get a fresh perspective on the work and get creatively re-energized. A staged reading is intended to launch the playwright into his or her final re-writes. Staged readings are rehearsed and directed with paid actors. Actors receive $15 per reading and directors are paid $25. PCSF pays for the first 6 actors, the playwright pays for any additional actors.
Networking EventsEach quarter PCSF hosts a networking event of some kind. This ranges from our Season Soiree to submission parties, speakers forums, donor thank you parties and special subject workshops.
SheherezadeSheherezade is PCSF's annual fundraising showcase event. Member playwrights get an opportunity to strut their stuff with 8 to 10 eight-minute plays. Themes vary but typically center around a "year-in-review". Sheherezade is a full production and very popular. There is a silent auction each night with items ranging from massages and free theatre tickets and this year a vacation rental in Hawaii! If interested in donating items for the silent auction please contact our Development Director, Alina Trowbridge at Alina@playwrightscentersf.org. Sheherezade is generally the first weekend in February.
Theatre NightPCSF will occassionally obtain discounted tickets from local theatres. We offer them to our members and organize a group to attend the play and meet afterward for discussion. We believe attending theatre is a critical part of every playwright's development process. In addition familiarity with local theatre organizations and their work is critical for every playwright. Check our calendar for Theatre Night events.
Support Local Theatre - General RequestPCSF claims to develop playwrights and we do. •Members Patricia Milton and Andrew Black were commissioned by New Conservatory Theater to develop It’s Murder, Mary for a full production in the spring of 2008. The play had a staged reading at PCSF in 2005. •Allston James’ Foreign Women, which received a staged reading at PCSF in 2006, was produced at the Carl Cherry Center in Los Altos, California in June 2007. •Ken Slattery developed his play, American Irish, at PCSF Scene Nights, self-produced it, and played to sold-out houses at The Exit on Taylor for 2 weeks. Your gift of $50, $100 or whatever suits your means, will help PCSF continue our successful efforts to empower playwrights and develop new work for the theatre: •$500 covers the cost of room rental for 10 Scene Nights •$100 covers the cost of hiring a director and actors for 1 Staged Reading •$50 pays the cost of hiring actors for 1 Developmental Reading Thank you for supporting playwrights in their art.
