CultureCount - New England's Cultural DatabaseThe New England Foundation for the Arts announces the launch of CultureCount, New England’s Cultural Database. This free online resource, located at www.culturecount.org, is the only comprehensive and consistent data collection resource for New England's cultural nonprofits, businesses, and professionals. Constantly updated and expanded, CultureCount’s local data supplements the federal data analyzed by NEFA in research reports on the creative sector and fits within the definitional structure outlined in its recently released report The Creative Economy: A New Definition. The only regional cultural database in the country, CultureCount provides New England state arts agencies, researchers, cultural organizations, funders, artists, policy makers, economists, and the general public with a wealth of research information to support analysis, advocacy, and policy development.
ExpeditionsNEFA's Expeditions program funds cross-disciplinary touring projects in New England, stimulating richer collaborative opportunities in arts touring and presentation. Grants are made to New England-based nonprofit organizations to support the planning or touring of projects with performing, literary, and/or visual arts components. The Expeditions program strives to support New England as a laboratory for the development of high quality arts projects for region-wide touring. It broadens the range of arts projects and activities available to New England communities while encouraging thorough planning and delivery of innovative cross-discipline, cross-sector, and/or cross-cultural projects that provide meaningful community-artist-presenter interaction.
Fund for the ArtsPart of NEFA's Public Art program, Fund for the Arts supports projects that pair artists with nonprofit community organizations to create public artworks that engage audiences and encourage participation in the arts. Fund for the Arts seeks to advance and provide visibility for the arts in Greater Boston by placing artists and creative endeavors at the heart of community and civic life. Fund for the Arts invites proposals from nonprofit organizations in Greater Boston that are interested in working with local artists on the planning and design of new public art projects in their communities.
Meet the Composer/New EnglandIn cooperation with Meet the Composer, Inc., NEFA offers grants to nonprofit organizations in New England to provide interaction between individual composers and audiences related to specific performances of the composer's work. Meet the Composer/New England grantees provide opportunities for composers that will ensure informative contact with audiences and communities. These include workshops, lectures, open rehearsals, and appearances on local media broadcasts. The composer’s process of creating original music must be reflected in the planned community activities. Meet the Composer/New England increases opportunities for composers by fostering the creation, performance, dissemination, and appreciation of their music, and to provide meaningful interactions and experiences between composers, their music, and the citizens of New England. Eligible projects encompass the full range of music composition, including jazz, European classical, and songwriting.
National Dance ProjectThe National Dance Project (NDP) provides a system of support for the living, growing discipline of contemporary dance by supporting the production and touring of dance in the United States. NDP views touring as central to the vitality of dance as an art form and structures its granting process to link the creation and touring of new work. Through the dedicated efforts of dance presenters across the country, NDP helps audiences connect with the rich and varied talents of choreographers and their companies. In addition to its core programming, NDP has established several international partnerships and initiatives such as the Regional Development Dance Initiative, the Center for Creative Research, and the Contemporary Art Centers network. NDP remains the primary source of national support in the field for individual dance artists whether established, emerging, non-traditional, and/or culturally-specific.
New England States Touring (NEST)NEST is a cooperative program with the state arts agencies of New England that provides support to nonprofit presenters (such as theaters libraries, schools, service or arts organizations) for performances, readings, and related community activities by artists that meet the program’s eligibility criteria. Performing and literary artists eligible for NEST represent a wide range of disciplines such as music, dance, opera, musical theater, poetry, writing, interdisciplinary work, and folk arts. Nonprofit presenters may apply for up to 50% of a NEST-eligible artist’s fee, as long as the artist is based outside of the presenter’s home state. Artists interested in becoming NEST-eligible must create a complete profile on MatchBook.org, a searchable directory of New England artists which contains a sub-directory of those artists eligible for funding through the NEST program.
MatchBook.orgNEFA, in partnership with the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the other state arts agencies of New England, has launched MatchBook.org, an online cultural marketplace designed to bring together New England’s performing artists and the people and organizations wishing to present them. This free website features an easy-to-search directory of artists, performance spaces, and presenting organizations, designed to ‘MATCH’ artists with presenters that ‘BOOK’ them to perform.
Presenter Travel FundThe Presenter Travel Fund provides monetary assistance to arts programmers or curatorial staff in New England so that they may investigate new or unfamiliar artists or ensembles. Applicants may apply for funding to help cover the expense of attending festivals, showcases, conferences, or other cultural events where they can see artistic work. NEFA encourages applicants to seek out opportunities where multiple cultural events are taking place, so that they may experience as many performances and genres as possible in their travels. Presenter Travel Fund Grants to non-profit, New England-based organizations will cover up to 50% of total expenses, including mileage, economy class transportation, meals, lodging, admission, and, where applicable, conference or showcase registration fees. In general, grants do not exceed $500. If awarded, grant funds are released on a reimbursement basis after appropriate documentation (including receipts) is submitted.
Creative Economy Research & Learning at NEFAThe creative economy includes cultural nonprofits, businesses, and professionals that together provide a significant contribution to local and regional economies by creating and distributing cultural goods and services. NEFA works to define and measure this important economic sector by providing data and analysis, convening researchers in this field, and sharing resources with regional, national, and international partners. NEFA’s latest research report, The Creative Economy: A New Definition, provides an update on the full spectrum of creative economy industries and occupations, which includes for-profit businesses as well as nonprofit organizations. It also includes a new research definition and protocol for measuring the creative economy. View this and other reports at www.nefa.org/pubs/index.html. NEFA began commissioning research in 1978 to provide constituents with the tools to advocate and strengthen the case for the centrality of arts and culture in our communities.
Native Arts @ NEFANEFA's Native Arts program supports Native American artists through grant making and network development, building regional and national support structures to help Native artists reach broader audiences, connect with new markets, and gain access to financial resources. The Native Arts New England fund supports Native artists residing in the six New England states, with a focus on involvement of and benefit to New England communities, providing funding for the preservation of Native arts and cultural traditions, contemporary Native arts, and/or training and technical assistance. The National Native Artist Exchange fund provides support for Native American artists residing in the United States to travel to different regions of the country to exchange artistic knowledge and skills, providing an opportunity for Native artists to teach, learn, and collaborate in traditional and/or contemporary Native art forms through travel from one region to another across the nation.
