I have led a volunteer-based tutor/mentor program that connects inner city youth with adult volunteers for the past 30 years. Kids join us in 7th grade and we promise "we'll do all we can to help them be starting jobs and careers by age 25".

%newline%For any youth who is 11 or 12 when they join us, this is a 10 to 15 year commitment. For youth living in high poverty neighborhoods, with too few adults who support learning, or model the various jobs and careers kids can aspire to, this is a daunting challenge.

%newline%Yet, if the nation wants to "leave no child behind" it needs to make programs like ours available in high poverty neighborhoods of every big city in the country.
